Why Barcelona Rejected Rashford Despite His 29 Goal Contributions

Barcelona decided not to sign Marcus Rashford permanently despite his strong 2025/26 season, where he scored 14 goals and provided 15 assists during his loan spell from Manchester United.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the decision was not because of any problem between Rashford and Hansi Flick.

The Barcelona manager was happy with Rashford’s attitude, performances, and contribution to the team’s successful season.

Instead, Flick wanted a forward who could offer more versatility and defensive work. Barcelona felt Anthony Gordon was a better fit because he could play on either flank and provide the work rate needed when the team did not have the ball.

So, the decision was mainly based on tactical needs rather than Rashford’s goal contributions. Barcelona believed Gordon’s overall profile suited Flick’s plans better.
